Science has proven that surrounding ourselves with plants and flowers is beneficial to our emotional wellness.

October is Emotional Wellness Month and we think that ties in perfectly with the ancestral traditions that have shaped our human bio-rhythms.

For our ancestors, tending to the fields for survival meant a lot of hard work to sustain through the winter. Thankfully, we are not as reliant on personal crops for survival these days, but we still take care to ensure our wellness through the cold winters, especially here in the Northeast.

Although times have changed, as fall begins, we still prepare our grounds and homes for our protection and comfort.

Traditionally, autumn was better known as harvest season, a time to reap the hard-earned benefits of the growing season. It still is to some degree…

When summer ends, we come inside, make our spaces comfortable and warm, and prepare to give thanks and celebrate abundance with holiday celebrations. We don’t think of it this way, but it is a routine for emotional wellness.

October is the perfect time to mindfully practice self-care, by bringing in the benefits of plants and flowers to ready our nest, and make it the most comfortable and pleasant for ourselves and our family.

My Pro Tip:

As humans, we have an innate instinct to connect with nature, it’s called biophilia, and it’s a whole thing! It’s how we know Life Is Better With Flowers & Plants. As the cold weather moves in, we invite you to come wander the greenhouses here at Studley’s. Experiencing the warmth, the smell of the earth, the scent of flowers lingering in the air, amongst all the lush greenery is good therapy. Taking home a little something extra is just another practice in self-care.

Not local? You can browse our greenhouse online to find all our plants in the Houseplants Collection, for nationwide shipping.

All of us at Studley’s wishing you wellness in mind, body and soul this month and always.

See you at Studley’s!

As florists, we witness how flowers relieve stress in our daily work, and now a new university study has proven it. Learn how living with flowers can reduce your holiday stress!

Everyday life is filled with challenges that can have an impact on our well-being. Now, as the holiday season kicks into high gear, so too do our emotions. While this is supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year filled with high spirits, many people also report heightened stress levels.

Holiday Stress

It’s always important to maintain a regimen of all the things we know are important to our good health such as, eating well, exercising and getting enough sleep–which can be especially challenging during the holidays.

As it turns out, flowers are a proven simple way to bring some additional peace and joy to this time of hustle and bustle.

New research conducted by the University of North Florida verifies what we’ve known all along about how the power of flowers relieve stress. The study, The Impact of Flowers on Perceived Stress Among Women, found adding flowers to indoor environments results in a meaningful reduction in stress.

Building on prior behavioral research done at Harvard, Rutgers and Texas A&M which found flowers make people happy, inspire creativity, heighten feelings of compassion and even improve energy, this new University of North Florida study is the first study to provide empirical evidence showing that flowers relieve stress.

In fact, the average reduction in stress among women who received and lived with flowers was -5.5 points on the Perceived Stress Questionnaire, a strong statistical significance in a decrease in stress, and a powerful conclusion.

Impact of Stress

According to lead researcher for the study, Erin Largo-Wright, Ph.D., program director at the University of North Florida’s Department of Public Health, “Stress is a leading public health indicator today. It’s extremely prevalent and considered a major factor in physical as well as mental health…”

It’s no wonder a subsequent survey by Wakefield Research found 68 percent of people say they feel stress on a weekly basis and 32 percent admit they feel stress every day. While stress is not exclusive to women, the research showed stress is particularly felt by women, with 1 in 4 experiencing stress multiple times a day. Research also shows stress is disproportionately felt by women during the holidays, with 44 percent of women reporting an increase of stress versus 31 percent of men.

The Power of Flowers to Relieve Stress | Top 3 Tips

Life is busy, we all work hard, have our own unique set of responsibilities and the list of things to accomplish seems never-ending. Now more than ever, and maybe most importantly during the holidays, we need to practice better care for ourselves and for others.

Practice Self Care

We all know when we are lacking in time for ourselves – mentally and physically. You may not be able to find the time to take that bubble bath, get in a run or lose yourself in a good book, but it’s easy to treat yourself to flowers. Bring your favorite flowers into your home or office space as a gesture of self-care and you’ll be rewarded with an improved mood that can help you tackle the world!

Practice Kindness

Partners, family and friends lean on each other. We share our burdens and solve problems together. The reality is, our personal or work obligations may keep us from doing as much as we would like and there are some things we have little control over. What we can do is look out for our loved ones. The holidays can be extremely difficult for some. If you know someone who is struggling with stress, loneliness or feeling a loss, sending flowers is a kind way to remind them they’re loved and appreciated. We discreetly accommodate orders from, “Anonymous” any time.

Color Your World

The science of Color psychology is the study of colors in relation to human behavior, a determinant of essential balance of mind, body and emotion. Studies have shown different hues influence everything from our mood to our buying decisions. In color therapy, color chakras are believed to be seven hues of energy corresponding to bodily glands and organs that affect physical and mental health. Give or get what speaks to you from our Flourish Collections, inspired by color and designed to bring good vibes.

The Difference Will Delight You

2018 marks 90 years in business for Studley Flower Gardens. Since our inception as your local florist in 1928, our flowers have marked many milestones. We are privileged to be a part of marking many precious moments of happiness, joy and comfort through the years. From weddings, babies, birthdays, romance and anniversaries, to get well, sympathy, special occasions or just because, each arrangement we offer under the Studley’s brand is our own proprietary design, uniquely conceived and prepared with our customers and their loved ones in mind.

Floral delivery is available locally or nationwide and available same day on orders placed by 2pm. Fresh Grab & Go floral bouquets are always at the ready in-store or at our kiosk location at Fiddlehead Farms in Somersworth, NH for those random acts of kindness for yourself or someone else.

My Pro Tip:

Let’s face it – stress is nothing but a ball of pent-up emotional energy and when emotions spill over into our work life, home life or other relationships we usually come away with regret. When you are feeling the pressure or just simply feeling uninspired, take time out for yourself. Not everyone knows it, but it’s no secret that being in nature has healing effects. We invite you to take a detour from your errands or skip out on your lunch break to visit us to find some serenity in the greenhouse. You’ll find the warmth and solitude combined with the scent of the earth and fresh flowers is the perfect prescription to soothe the soul!

See you at Studley’s!

Cutting gardens not only provide fresh flowers to fill your home with romantic color and fragrance, but also with happiness!

Studies show that just the presence of flowers triggers happy emotions, heightens feelings of life satisfaction and affects social behavior in a positive manner.

Living with flowers is shown to strengthen feelings of compassion, and decrease feelings of anxiety and worry, so why not surround yourself with them all the time?

It’s easy to get started on creating your own happiness with a cutting garden. With a little planning or some garden re-organization, you can fill your home with the power of positivity from fresh flowers for much of the growing season!

Grab a notebook or journal and locate the sunniest spots on your property, then determine what kind of space your current landscape allows for. Plot out the dimensions of each available space and take note of what’s growing nearby. Keep in mind, plantings of cutting flowers are great as a border or backdrop to vegetable gardens. In fact, some plants (like Marigolds) are a natural pest repellent and look great planted among vegetables.

If you prefer a single designated area, carve out some space for a new garden or raised beds. The good folks at the Old Farmer’s Almanac show you how. With the right selections, you might be surprised just how much you can fit in only a few square feet.

Whether you are working within existing gardens or creating a new space for your cutting garden, think about your ability to reach these new plantings with water. To keep blooms at their best, we recommend watering your cutting flowers with a soaker hose that lies among the base of plants. Watering from the top can make for soggy blossoms.

For additional ideas, print our
Cut Flower Perennials List

With your planting areas identified, use our Cutting Garden Bloom Chart to identify potential additions for your new spaces and then use our new online Plant Finder plant search tool to create your personal Studley’s Wish List

Bring your Wish List to Studley’s Garden Center and our pros will help you narrow your list of options to those that will integrate well by size, sun and soil requirements.

Remember, gardening teaches us patience. Annual plants will be ready for cutting the same year you plant, but these plantings will last only one season. If some of the plants on your list are perennials, they are more of a long-term investment and with proper care they will come back each year, but some can take a year or two before they are abundant with blooms.

Once your cutting garden is established, follow our pro florist tips for proper cutting and arrangement:

Use clean, sharp clippers or garden shears – ordinary household scissors can damage stems and prevent proper water uptake.

Bring a bucket into the garden to place your cuttings in water immediately. Take your cuttings as soon as the plants begin flowering and ideally in the early morning, when flowers are at their best from the benefits of the cool night air and morning dew. For plants with cluster blooms, choose stems that have at least one bud starting to open.

When possible, be strategic in choosing your cut location. Randomize your cuttings or cut from the back of plantings to maintain maximum outdoor garden display.

For most plants, cut about 1″ from the bottom of a main stem, at a 45 degree angle. For bulbs, cut where the stem color begins to transition from white to green. For woody stems, make a small split at the bottom after cutting. Inspect your cuttings for the presences of bugs and remove before bringing indoors.

Choose a vase in proportion to the length of your stems – stems should not be taller than about one and a half the size of the container, don’t overcrowd the vase and aim to arrange flowers uniformly all the way around.

To reduce bacterial growth in the vase, remove all foliage from the stems before arranging.

Shorter or fuller blooms can be placed lower in the arrangement, nearer the lip of the vase to create a look of volume and support taller stems.

Place your cut flowers in lukewarm water to avoid shock that can close up the stems. The exception to this rule applies to early spring bulb cuttings that will go in a vase without other flowers. Bulbs naturally flower in cold temps, so a vase full of tulips or daffodils will last longer if you initially place them in cold water.

We recommend a florist formulated preservative product as the best option for keeping flowers fresh and the water clear from bacteria.

In the days after you create your arrangement, keep your container full with water, and discard any spent blooms as they occur.

Now you’re ready to surround yourself at home or the office with beautiful, positive mood-enhancing, fresh cut flowers all season long!

Visit AboutFlowers.com for additional reading on cut flowers and also see our blog for How To Force Branches Indoors.

Need help? Let our Landscaping Pros design and create your cutting garden!

My Pro Tip:

To get more enjoyment indoors and salvage some blooms before extreme weather, take cuttings to enjoy indoors before heavy wind or rain forecasts.

Brighten your Mondays by bringing a fresh bouquet to your work space every week. It’s ok to cut blooms often, cutting regularly throughout the season promotes more blooms.

Create interest, texture and fill out your bouquets with berry cuttings and greens, such as dill, ferns, and ornamental grasses. Get creative with containers – search thrift stores or yard sales for old bottles, vintage teapots or florist vases to have plenty on hand when blooms are ready. Have fun! Place flowers in something serving as a watertight vessel inside of something unique or unexpected.

Above all – share your abundance with a friend. Nothing is more personal, thoughtful and appreciated than a surprise bouquet, fresh from your cutting garden.

See you at Studley’s!
