Fall can be the perfect season to plant new trees and shrubs, as long as you plant them at the right time. The ideal planting window is at least one month before the ground freezes. In New Hampshire, this typically falls between mid-October and mid-November. To give your trees and shrubs the best chance to thrive, aim to plant them by mid-October. That way, they’ll have enough time to establish roots and be well-prepared for a vibrant spring. In addition to planting your trees and shrubs at the appropriate time, follow these 5 steps to ensure they are healthy and blooming come spring.

Water: Make sure to keep already established shrubs and trees well watered into late fall. Moisture will help them survive the harsh New England winter conditions.

Apply Mulch: Add a two to four inch layer of mulch around the base of the shrubs and trees. Make sure you are keeping this away from the trunk to prevent rotting.

Prune: Make sure to prune your plants once they have entered dormancy. Dormancy is when plants growth naturally slows, this typically is triggered by shorter daylight and decreasing temperatures. Due to the dry summer that we experienced plants will most likely experience this earlier this season.

Protect the Trunk: Consider wrapping your shrubs and trees to protect them from damage. You can use tree wraps or even consider guards for younger trees.

The crisp air, warm colors, and falling leaves set the stage for a seasonal refresh. From planting vibrant mums and ornamental kale to adding decorative pumpkins, there are so many easy ways to embrace the beauty of fall. Start by following these 4 steps for an easy DIY fall container.

Choose a Container:

Select a large pot that can accommodate all of your plants, you can choose from terra cotta pots, olive buckets, or galvanized tubs.

Gather Fall Plants:

Choose fall ornamentals that thrive in brisk weather. Great options include ornamental kale and cabbage for bold color and texture. Add height and dimension with elements like fountain grass, or muhly grass. For visual additions, incorporate plants with contrasting foliage and color, such as grass, dusty miller, and pansies.

Assemble Your Planter:

Fill your container with potting soil, for a classic look place taller plants in the center and shorter plants or trailing ivy around the edges.

Adding the Finishing Touches:

Incorporate decorative branches for added height. To add a nice seasonal touch consider adding small pumpkins, gourds, or fall-themed decor, and finally add mulch to any gaps to fill out the container.

Your garden brings so much beauty during its peak season, so it only makes sense to give it the care it needs to make it through the winter. Taking the time to prepare now will set the stage for a lush, vibrant return in the spring. Follow these four essential steps below to get your garden ready for the colder months ahead.

Remove Spent Plants: Clear away any annuals and vegetables that have finished producing to prevent pests and diseases from overwintering. For legumes like peas and beans, cut the plants at the soil level and leave the roots to decay.

Plant Spring-Blooming Bulbs: Now is the perfect time to plant spring bulbs like tulips, and daffodils, for an early vibrant spring display.

Plant Cool Weather Vegetables: Crops like spinach, kale, lettuce, radishes, and swiss chard can handle light frosts and are good to plant now. Focus on varieties with a shorter days to maturity listed on the seed-packet.

Enrich The Soil: Add a generous layer of compost to replenish nutrients that was lost. You can gently work it into the top few inches of the soil.

Here are some simple ways to get started on your mid-summer refresh and keep flower containers looking stunning:

1. Deadheading

Deadheading offers more than just a clean look for your plants – removing older blooms is an essential task to encourage new growth and ensure your containers stay looking fresh. This simple act helps your plants conserve energy, so they can focus on producing new buds.

2. Refresh Soil

If your containers have been sitting for a while, the soil may have lost crucial nutrients. Consider refreshing the top few inches with fresh potting soil for a mid-summer infusion!

3. Add New Plants

Swapping out some plants will add a fresh burst of color. Summer annuals, such as petunias, coneflowers, and Black-eyed Susans, are perfect for adding vibrancy to your containers. Check out the links to these plants below!

4. Watering Habits

Watering is key during the heat of summer. Confirm your containers are getting enough water, but avoid over-watering. You can perform a simple finger test to check in on your plants. Stick your finger into the soil up to your first or second knuckle. If the soil feels dry, it’s time to water. If it feels moist, wait before watering again.

Aim to water early in the morning before the sun is high and evaporation kicks in. If mornings aren’t possible, early evening works too. The key is consistency: water deeply and regularly to keep roots strong and soil moist.

2. Encourage Blooms

Keep those flowers coming! Regularly deadhead spent flowers to promote new growth. Create Shade

Shield heat-sensitive plants by introducing natural shade.
Here in the Northeast, July through August are usually our dog days of summer, where we’re normally recommending consistent watering. In recent years, we’ve seen some pretty soggy starts to the season. When the garden gets too much rain, your plants might be experiencing the effects of waterlogging. Our landscape pros share some strategies to consider:

Raised beds or planting on slopes can help prevent water from pooling. This requires some pre-planning, but if you see pooling once, plan on seeing it again.

Mulching with organic material can aid in moisture regulation, preventing excessive moisture from sitting at plant roots. This is always a recommendation for healthy plants, rain or shine, but if your plants are suffering from too much water, this is a solution to try.

Be sure plants have adequate air circulation with proper pruning and spacing. Regular pruning is recommended in spring or fall, when plants are not budding or in bloom. In extreme cases, the benefit outweighs the risk and it’s ok to trim a few branches to allow air to flow.

Covering plants can help protect against damage from heavy rainfall. This can be especially helpful for vegetable gardens and other tender annuals or to keep things tidy before an event where presentation is important.

Finally, when the garden gets too much rain, excess moisture can contribute to the spread of fungal infections. Be sure to regularly inspect plants for signs of stress, disease, or pest infestations during prolonged rainy periods, and remove diseased or damaged plant parts.

As always, our Garden Center pros are here to guide you with plant selection for naturally damp spaces, or to advise on pest or disease control. Bring a photo when you visit and we’ll do our best to offer a suggested remedy.

If it’s time to address water regulation on your property, request a Landscaping Consult with our pros to address drainage, consider hardscapes, or how irrigation controls help bring efficiency and protect your landscape investment.

Pro Tip:

Cut fresh or “ready to bloom” buds before significant storms and enjoy them indoors!

See you at Studley’s!

With more than 35 years of installation and maintenance experience, our landscape professionals address some of the most frequently asked questions for businesses and homeowners with these Irrigation System Tips:

What is the best sprinkler for my purposes?

Rotor Sprinklers: Efficient for covering large open areas such as yards, fields, sports fields, golf courses and more.

Spray Head Sprinklers: Ideal for small, difficult to cover small, odd shaped, or difficult areas where there is little room to apply water, such as narrow walkways along the house, the strip of grass between hardscape fixtures, etc. Unfortunately sprays are not as water efficient, requiring twice as much water per square inch as Rotors, and can not be put on the same zone together.

Multiple-Projectile Rotator Sprinklers (MPs): MPs are some of the newest technology available, combing flexibility to design systems with spray heads, with the functionality to pair with rotors. When paired with large rotors, MP’s correct a lot of the deficiencies of spray heads. MPs can be used to cover those difficult areas that can’t be reached by the larger rotors and are designed to apply the same amount of water per inch as a larger rotor.

Unlike many competitors, Studley’s recent designs include the ability to more easily add additional zones or sprinklers to your existing irrigation system. Older Studley systems and any system not installed by Studley’s, will require a system inspection to determine how easily we can accomplish this request.
