Fall is Here – DIY Fall Containers

Fall has arrived, and now is the perfect time to give your garden and yard a cozy autumn makeover with DIY containers. Follow these simple, step-by-step instructions to transform your yard or patio into an autumn outdoor space full of color, texture, and seasonal charm!

The crisp air, warm colors, and falling leaves set the stage for a seasonal refresh. From planting vibrant mums and ornamental kale to adding decorative pumpkins, there are so many easy ways to embrace the beauty of fall in your containers. Follow these easy steps to create a DIY container full of seasonal plants and autumn color.

1. Choose a Container:

Select a large pot that can accommodate all of your plants. Terracotta pots, olive buckets, or galvanized tubs all work well. The crucial thing to remember is to choose a container that is large enough to avoid crowing your plants.

2. Gather Fall Plants:

Choose fall ornamentals that thrive in brisk weather. Great options include ornamental kale and cabbage for bold color and texture. Add height and dimension with elements like fountain grass, or muhly grass. For visual additions, incorporate plants with contrasting foliage and color, such as grass, dusty miller, and pansies. Of course, mums are the class fall floral to include in your containers or place on their own throughout your outdoor spaces.

3. Assemble Your Planter:

Fill your container with potting soil and position your plants. For a classic multi-level look, place taller plants in the center and shorter plants or trailing ivy around the edges.

4. Adding the Finishing Touches:

Once your plants are positioned in the container and their roots covered in soil, you are ready to add some seasonal finishing touches to your container. Incorporate decorative branches for added height. To add a nice seasonal touch consider adding small pumpkins, gourds, or fall-themed decor. Add mulch to any gaps to fill out the container.

Use your fall planters to anchor the corners of your patio, add a seasonal flourish to your walkway, or decorate your porch. Experiment with different arrangements and combinations for a varied and natural look, or replicate the same arrangement in multiple containers if you prefer a more sophisticated garden style.
