Past the Last Frost

New England weather is never predictable, but after Memorial Day, we’re usually past the last frost. Generally, the last spring frost in southern and central New Hampshire occurs between mid and late May. Vegetable gardeners especially need to be careful not to plant too soon, as many crops need warm weather to grow and will be damaged by frost. Popular flowers, such as impatiens and petunias, are also easily damaged by a light freeze. By waiting until after Memorial Day to do your outdoor planting, you can protect your sensitive plants from cold temperatures.

Ideal Soil Temperature

More than just air temperature has an impact on your plants. You also need to think about the temperature of the soil. After the ground thaws, the soil is still pretty cold and needs time to absorb enough heat to consistently stay above 60℉ to 65℉. Whether you’re planting from seeds or transplanting, warm soil is necessary for plants to thrive.

Consistent Nighttime Lows

Even though nighttime temperatures are often above freezing throughout the end of April and the beginning of May, the weather is often still too cold for tender plants. After Memorial Day, nighttime lows are consistently well above freezing, often in the 50s. This seasonal shift allows plants to thrive and outpace pests and disease.
